singapore..idol?
and so the national day celebrations started off with a bang and ended on a high note, just like every other august 9th we have known. but what made it especially significant and memorable was the tribute to Mr. Goh Chok Tong, singapore's second Prime Minister. the segment mirroring his 14 years of leadership was moving and close to the heart, and many were unanimous in cheering this remarkably astute and capable visionary singapore is blessed to have.
thank you, PM Goh. this nation has thrived and prospered under your leadership, and you are a clear example of how a nation is known, most importantly for its people.
then came the premiere of
singapore idol. unsurprisingly, the emphasis was on who
didn't make it, rather than those who shone at the auditions. trust singapore for wanting to be the best in everything! notably, it was to my amazement that i know four of those
idol-hopefuls who appeared on national television tonight. veroy, meixian, ting rui & alastair, you've all got your shots at stardom! but i did feel sorry for alastair, because even the judges said he has the qualities, but they were angered by the fact that he admitted he prepared his song the night before. you can't really expect much from someone who was still in the army in june, can you? and you definitely cannot take away the credit from him for being honest. just look at the statistics. haha.
whatever the case, i do hope
singapore idol will not be a flop like most of the other
mediacorp talent shows like
fame &
talentime. if i may say so, artistes who wish to make it further than caldecott hill (which reminds me: "i'm doing to caldecott!!" like wow.) have to make it big
overseas before they come back. hmm..that's the paradox and connection(?) between international stardom and local recognition. if the singapore idol were to have the same fate as the
fame and
talentime contestants, he/she might as well be crowned singapore
idle, having nothing to do or crow about.
well, i guess what's most important today is the nation's birthday.
Happy 39th Birthday Singapore!
my utmost respect for your undying determination and resilience. :)
